The Woodlands Hiking Club, which celebrated its 39th Anniversary in 2022, is a volunteer group promoting safe, healthy and enjoyable hiking opportunities through local day hikes, weekend camping trips and extended trips.

Our members represent a variety of hiking abilities and interests. We offer something for everyone.  Some members want to hike 8 miles+, others have a limit of 3 to 5 miles, and then there are those that want to take pictures and may do only a mile or two. Every hike we do, no matter how long, provides the option to stop when you need to.

We offer monthly local day hikes; weekend/long weekend outings 7-9 times/year; and 2+/- extended trips annually. Whether you tent, RV or prefer to “hotel camp” – you have options.

In addition to hiking and camping, the club organizes various social activities and educational programs throughout the year.

We invite you to join us for a day hike and/or to attend our monthly meeting the first Wednesday of the month (September – May).

To join The Woodlands Hiking Club, fill out the membership application and submit it with your $25 annual dues.

Our History

The club started in 1982 and was formally organized in 1983 by a small group of employees at Mitchell Energy in The Woodlands. Several of the original members are still active in the club.

In the beginning, there were Saturday-morning hikes in the greater Houston area that included trips to Sweet Leaf Nature Trail, Jesse Jones Park, trails in The Woodlands, the Mercer Arboretum, Huntsville State Park, and Double Lake.

The club met on the first Wednesday of each month at the local community center. As the group grew, a monthly newsletter was written and sent to members. Trips expanded to the state parks, and the club began planning out-of-state trips to places that included Glacier National Park, Grand Canyon, and Yellowstone. For many years, the club also did an annual trip to Big Bend National Park; one of the club’s favorite places.
